Music publishing and the social media

To take publishing in its broadest sense, we must also include the music industry, which is undergoing many changes. While music piracy is increasing steadily, music publishers can take advantage of published content online. By scavenging and monitoring social sharing sites such as Youtube and myspace.com, industry members have signed artists based on their talents and apparent popularity, ensuring success for the artist’s respective record labels. These artists have included Lana Del Rey, Charice and Justin Bieber (from Youtube) as well as Lily Allen, Sean Kingston and Adele (from Myspace). The popularity and sallibility of these acts is evident; sites such as these are imperative to music publishers in finding “the next big thing” (Elliot, 2011).
